Biography of Viktor Pinchuk
Viktor Pinchuk is a prominent Ukrainian entrepreneur who currently controls the financial and industrial group Interpipe. He is considered one of the wealthiest individuals in Ukraine and is ranked 645th on Forbes' list of the world's richest people, with a net worth of $5 billion. In Ukraine, he is ranked second or third alongside Sergey Taruta.
Early Life and Career
Viktor Pinchuk began his career in Dnipro, Ukraine. From 1981 to 1983, he worked as a lab assistant at the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute and as a cold pipe cutter at the Nizhnedneprovsk Pipe Rolling Plant. After graduating from the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute in 1983, where he specialized in metal pressure processing, he pursued a career in scientific research and successfully defended his doctoral dissertation. From 1983 to 1997, Pinchuk worked at the State Scientific-Research Project Institute of Tube Industry, holding various positions, including researcher, engineer, senior engineer, junior researcher, and senior researcher.
In 1990, together with his father-in-law, mother, and wife, Pinchuk founded the scientific and investment group Interpipe. Initially, the business focused on simple pipe resale, taking advantage of the significant price difference between "government" and "commercial" prices.
Political and Philanthropic Involvement
In addition to his business ventures, Pinchuk has been actively involved in politics and philanthropy. He served as the President of the Scientific and Investment Group Interpipe from 1997 to 1998. In 1998, he was elected as a member of the Ukrainian Parliament, where he held various positions, including the Head of the Subcommittee on Entrepreneurship, Investment Policy, and Antimonopoly Legislation. Pinchuk was also a member of the Trudova Ukrayina Party and co-founder of the party. He served as an advisor to the President of Ukraine and a member of the Council of Entrepreneurs at the Cabinet of Ministers.
Pinchuk's philanthropic activities date back to 1992 when he started the Victor Pinchuk Foundation. The foundation has implemented several charitable programs, including the Tomorrow.ua scholarship program, aimed at supporting gifted students. In collaboration with filmmaker Serge Bukovsky and Steven Spielberg, Pinchuk supported the production of the documentary film "Tell Me Your Name" about the Holocaust.
Personal Life and Business Ventures
Pinchuk's first marriage to Elena Arshava, which ended in divorce, played a significant role in his entry into the world of big business. His father-in-law, Vladimir Nikolaevich Arshava, who was the deputy head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Health Department at the time, assisted Pinchuk in creating the Interpipe group. Rumors suggest that Pinchuk even received special "blessings" from Pavel Lazarenko, a close associate and former superior of his father-in-law.
Despite his divorce from his first wife, Elena Arshava, Pinchuk maintains a good relationship with her and continues to involve her in his business structures. They have a daughter named Maria, who is currently studying at Oxford University.
Pinchuk is currently married to Elena Franchuk, the daughter of former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. They officially married in 2002 after initially living in an unofficial marriage. They have a daughter named Ekaterina, and Elena also has a son from her previous marriage, Roman.
In addition to his business interests in Ukraine, Pinchuk has connections with Israeli millionaires. He was one of the businessmen, alongside Rinat Akhmetov, involved in the privatization of the Krivorozhstal Metallurgical Plant. After the Orange Revolution, the plant was re-privatized and sold to British steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Pinchuk actively uses his media empire, which includes several Ukrainian television channels and print publications, to create the image of an "enlightened oligarch."
