Early Life and Education
Viktor Gennadievich Savelyev was born on March 9, 1948, in Liepaja, Latvian SSR. His parents were Gennady Mikhailovich Savelyev and Anna Ivanovna Savelyeva. From 1967 to 1971, Savelyev studied at the Faculty of Physical Education at the Ivanovo State Pedagogical University named after D.A. Furmanov, graduating as a coach-teacher.
Coaching Career
After graduating from university, Savelyev worked as a coach for the children's and youth sports school of the trade unions in the city of Kostroma from 1972 to 1980. In 1980, he became the senior coach of the regional specialized children's and youth sports school of the Olympic reserve of the regional sports committee for speed skating, a position he has held to this day.
In 1993, Savelyev was awarded the title of Honored Coach of Russia for speed skating, after one of his students, Alexander Golubev, won 2nd place in the World Championship in Japan in the 1000m distance. For Golubev's victory in the 500m distance at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, Savelyev was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples.
Other Accomplishments
Savelyev is a Judge of the All-Union category in speed skating (awarded on January 30, 1991). He has been the chairman of the Kostroma Regional Speed Skating Federation since 1972.
Personal Life
Savelyev is married to Galina Ivanovna Savelyeva (née Skvortsova), who was born on October 3, 1946. They have two children: Natalia Viktorovna Savelyeva (born March 19, 1972) and Andrey Viktorovich Savelyev (born July 7, 1977). Savelyev enjoys contemporary music, fishing, reading historical novels and modern detective stories, and is proficient in English.
