Major General and Distinguished Scientist
Major General Guliko Elizbarovich Lomidze (1919-1984) was a renowned military scientist and educator.
Early Life and Education
Born on December 15, 1919, in the Georgian SSR, Lomidze graduated from the Georgian Industrial Institute in 1942 and the Dzerzhinsky Artillery Academy in 1943. He became a member of the Communist Party in 1944.
Military Career
Lomidze's military service spanned from 1943 to 1984, entirely within the Academy. He achieved the rank of Major General in 1962 and served as Head of the Department of Special Weapons from 1960 to 1984.
Scientific Achievements
Lomidze made significant contributions to the theory of warhead design for strategic missiles and defense systems for military spacecraft. In the mid-1950s, he developed a theory for the structural and thermal design of missile warheads. From 1965 onwards, he focused on designing re-entry vehicles.
In the 1960s, Lomidze played a leadership role in developing active spacecraft defense systems and establishing their operational principles. His research findings influenced the development of space defense systems and weapon designs.
Academic Contributions
Lomidze was an influential educator who supervised 40 PhD candidates and assisted in the training of 6 doctors of science. He received the "For Excellent Achievement in Higher Education of the USSR" award.
Recognition and Legacy
Throughout his career, Lomidze was honored with the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order for Service to the Fatherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR (3rd class), and 15 medals. He passed away on October 31, 1984, and was buried in Vanis, Georgia. His wife, Sofia Grigorievna, and sons Guram and Boris survived him.
