Early Life and Family
Vilis Kristopans, a prominent Latvian politician and businessman, was born into a family that faced adversity during Soviet rule. His father, Janis Kristopans, was a member of the Latvian Legion SS and later fought against Soviet forces as a member of the forest brothers movement. His mother, Valerija Barkovska, was deported to Siberia.
Education and Business Ventures
In 1980, Kristopans graduated from the Riga Polytechnic Institute with a degree in architecture and construction. He embarked on a successful business career, founding a cooperative in 1989 and later establishing the timber company "Dardedze."
Political Involvement
Kristopans became involved in politics in 1992 as a co-founder of the influential "Club 21," which later formed the core of the "Latvian Way" party. He served as Minister of State Revenues, Minister of Transport, and Prime Minister of Latvia.
Resignation and Subsequent Activities
In 1999, Kristopans resigned from the position of Prime Minister. He was elected to the Saeima (Latvian Parliament) in 2002 but did not participate in any debates. After 2006, he stepped away from politics.
Business Interests and Philanthropy
Kristopans has been listed among Latvia's millionaires since 2008. He is a supporter of Donald Trump and has expressed admiration for his business acumen. He was a sponsor of Laima Vaikule's "Rendezvous" festival, which replaced the "New Wave" festival in Jurmala.
Personal Life
Kristopans is married to Aija Kristopane and has three children: Kaspars, Kristaps, and Nicole. In recent years, he has become an avid golfer and has won six Latvian championships.
