Early Life and Academic Career

Youssef Yousfi was born in Algeria. He pursued higher education and became an associate professor and later a full professor of chemical engineering at the École Polytechnique Nationale and the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene in Algiers, respectively.

Industrial and Government Roles

After his academic career, Yousfi held various managerial positions in the chemical industry and the Ministry of Industry and Energy. In the late 1970s, he was appointed Vice President of Marketing for Sonatrach and became its General Manager in 1985.

Political Career

Yousfi's political career began in 1996 when he was appointed Head of the Presidential Administration under Lamine Zeroual. He was subsequently appointed Minister of Oil and Energy in 1997 and became a member of the National People's Assembly, the Algerian parliament, for the first time. In early 1999, he became President of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). On December 23, 1999, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Diplomatic Missions

In April 2001, Yousfi was appointed Algeria's Ambassador to Canada. In 2006, he became Algeria's Ambassador to the United Nations.

Prime Ministership

On March 13, 2014, Yousfi was appointed Prime Minister of Algeria, a position he held until his resignation in 2019.

Personal Life

Youssef Yousfi is married and has three children.
