Vincent Bach, born Vincent Schrottenbach in 1890 in Austria, was a gifted musician and brilliant engineer. Combining his passions, Bach revolutionized brass instruments, creating instruments with unparalleled tonal qualities that became the benchmark for professional musicians worldwide.

From Violin to Trumpet

Vincent Bach's musical journey began with the violin but quickly transitioned to the trumpet, captivated by its majestic sound. Despite his aptitude for technical sciences, evident from his graduation from a mechanical engineering school, Bach's heart belonged to music, particularly the trumpet.

The Need for Quality Mouthpieces

Bach's realization of the need for superior mouthpieces for brass instruments became glaringly apparent during his service as a sergeant and bandmaster of the 306th Field Artillery Band during World War I. His experiences leading the bugle school firmly established in his mind the unacceptable quality of instruments and mouthpieces at the time.

Birth of the Bach Mouthpiece

During his leave from the army, Bach set up a workshop in the basement of Selmer Music Store in New York City, dedicated to modernizing and developing new mouthpieces. In 1918, he invested $300 in a foot-operated lathe, rented a space at 11 East 14th Street, and founded his mouthpiece manufacturing company.

"Bach Stradivarius" Trumpets

Bach's business flourished, and in 1924, he crafted his first Bach trumpets, which musicians dubbed the "Stradivarius of trumpets," laying the foundation for the "Bach Stradivarius" brand. In 1928, the "Bach Stradivarius" trombones followed suit.

Legacy and Impact

In 1961, at the age of 71, Vincent Bach sold his company. Despite receiving twelve more lucrative offers, Bach chose Selmer because he trusted their commitment to preserving his legacy and continuing his pursuit of卓越性. Bach's equipment was moved from New York to Selmer's factory in Elkhart, Indiana, where he trained craftsmen in his techniques.

Today, the Conn-Selmer Corporation continues to meticulously apply Bach's technological innovations and blueprints to produce Bach Stradivarius instruments that remain the choice of professional musicians worldwide, a testament to his enduring impact on the musical landscape.
