Biography of Vince Lamar Carter
Vince Lamar Carter, an American professional basketball player, currently plays for the NBA team, the Sacramento Kings. He plays as a shooting guard and small forward. Carter was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the 1998 NBA Draft and immediately traded to the Toronto Raptors. He has also played for the New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, and Dallas Mavericks. Carter won an Olympic gold medal in 2000 as a member of the USA national team. He is the cousin of basketball player Tracy McGrady and is known by the nicknames Vinsanity and Air Canada. In 2011, Carter became the 37th player in NBA history to score 20,000 career points. In February 2017, he became the fifth player in NBA history to make 2,000 career three-pointers. Carter is also among the top 20 players in NBA history for the number of games played.
Early Life
Vince Carter was born on January 26, 1977, in Daytona Beach, Florida. From the age of four, he attended various public and private schools in Daytona Beach, DeLand, and South Miami. Carter was the captain of the volleyball team at Mainland High School and was also the most outstanding basketball player to have ever played for the school. He graduated from high school in 1995. During his education, Carter received individual awards from USA Today, Parade, and McDonald's All-America. He was also named the Florida State High School Basketball Player of the Year in 1995. In the same year, he was called up to the USA youth basketball team. Apart from basketball, Carter had a passion for music and played the saxophone and baritone saxophone.
College Career
In 1995, Carter enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and became a member of the university's basketball team, the Tar Heels. He played for the Tar Heels for three years, from 1995 to 1998. His coach was Dean Smith, and later Bill Guthridge. Carter helped the team reach the Final Four twice (1997, 1998) and was the leading scorer in both games. In 1998, he was named the NCAA Defensive Player of the Year and had the best field goal percentage in the league (59.1%). In the same year, he was selected to the NCAA All-American Second Team. Following his teammate Antawn Jamison, Carter declared himself eligible for the 1998 NBA Draft.
Professional Career
Toronto Raptors (1998-2004)
Carter was selected as the 5th overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. However, he was immediately traded to the Toronto Raptors.
He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1999 and won the Slam Dunk Contest in 2000, which is held before the NBA All-Star Game.
Phoenix Suns (2010-2011)
On December 10, 2011, Carter's contract with the NBA team Phoenix Suns was terminated using the amnesty provision.
Dallas Mavericks (2011-2014)
On December 12, 2011, Carter signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks. On November 25, 2012, he played his 1000th NBA game against the Los Angeles Lakers (89-115) and became the 132nd player in NBA history to reach this milestone.
Memphis Grizzlies (2014-2017)
On July 12, 2014, Carter signed a three-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies worth $12.2 million.
Sacramento Kings (2017-present)
On July 7, 2017, it was announced that Carter had signed a contract with the Sacramento Kings.
