In 1982, La Scola won the "Vico Verdiane Competition." His debut came the following year in Gaetano Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" at the Teatro Regio in Parma. He quickly gained international recognition, performing at La Monnaie in Brussels and, at the age of 30, making his debut at La Scala in Milan in the role of Nemorino in "L'elisir d'amore."

International Success

La Scola graced the stages of prestigious opera houses worldwide. Notable performances included Rodolfo in "La bohème" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (1993) and various Donizetti roles such as Ernesto, Nemorino, Gennaro, Edgar, Roberto Devereux, and others. He expanded his repertoire to include works by Verdi, Bellini, Puccini, and other classical composers.

While La Scola was sometimes criticized for lacking a distinctive vocal timbre, his performances were often unforgettable. One of his most acclaimed performances was the title role in Jacques Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffman," which he sang on the same day his mother passed away in 2002.
