Early Life and Education
Born:September 28, 1952, in Columbia, South CarolinaVi Lyles was raised in a family with a construction-owning father and a teacher mother. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Queens University of Charlotte and went on to earn a Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Career in Charlotte
Budget Analyst and Assistant to the City Manager:Lyles began her career in Charlotte as a budget analyst and assistant to the city manager.
Consulting Director:
From 2004 onward, she held roles as consulting director at Lee Institute and Flynn Heath Holt.

Keith Lamont Scott Shooting and Plan for Racial Reconciliation, 2016
In the wake of the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott by police, Lyles proposed a plan to address racial and economic disparities in Charlotte. Several of her proposals were adopted by the City Council.
Mayoral Election, 2017
Democratic Primary:Lyles won a close mayoral primary contested by incumbent Mayor Jennifer Roberts.
General Election:
In November 2017, she defeated Republican opponent Kenny Smith to become the first African American female mayor of Charlotte and its first former city manager to hold the office.

Family:Lyles is a widow and a mother of four.
