Early Career

Vitaliy Khmelnytskyy, a renowned Soviet and Ukrainian footballer, embarked on his professional journey with Zhdanov's "Azovstal" in 1962. Following an invitation from Oleg Ochenkhov, he joined Donetsk's "Shakhtar" in the same year.

Rise to Prominence with Dynamo Kyiv

While at "Shakhtar," Ivan Pavlovich Boboshko introduced Khmelnytskyy to the iconic "fish" header, a technique that became his signature move. In 1965, due to persistent pursuit from CSKA, he opted to join Dynamo Kyiv.

During his seven-year tenure with the Kyiv club (1965-1972), Khmelnytskyy played a pivotal role in their four Soviet championships (1966, 1967, 1968, 1971) and two Soviet Cup triumphs (1964, 1966).

International Career

Khmelnytskyy represented the USSR national team from 1965 to 1971, making 20 appearances and scoring seven goals. He participated in the 1970 World Cup but missed out on the 1966 edition due to tactical discrepancies with coach N. Morozov.

Managerial Career

After hanging up his boots, Khmelnytskyy transitioned into coaching and led "Granit" Cherkassy (1973-1974) and "Kryvbas" (1978-1979). Subsequently, he worked as a coach in the Dynamo Kyiv football academy, nurturing talented players like Sergey Zayets, Yuriy Dmytrulin, and Ilya Tsymbalar.

Legacy and Passing

Vitaliy Khmelnytskyy passed away in Kyiv on February 13, 2019, at the age of 75. He left behind a rich legacy as a legendary footballer and respected coach in Ukrainian and Soviet football history.
