Early Life and Education
Born into a Jewish family in Chelyabinsk, Russia, Vitaly Malkin developed a fascination with mathematics at a young age. He graduated with honors from Chelyabinsk's Physics and Mathematics Lyceum No. 31, excelling in chess competitions.
Academic Journey
From 1969 to 1975, Malkin pursued a degree in physics at the Ural Polytechnic Institute. While majoring in physics, he immersed himself in painting, philosophy, and psychology, studying the works of renowned thinkers like Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Kafka, and Freud.
After graduating with distinction, Malkin became an aspirant at the Moscow Institute of Railway Engineers (MIIT) from 1975 to 1983. He earned his doctorate in technical science in 1983, specializing in the metrology of laser radiation.
Business Beginnings
During his time as an aspirant, Malkin met Bidzina Ivanishvili, an aspiring businessman. Their friendship led to a joint venture in the late 1980s, where they began by reselling personal computers. Later, Malkin and Ivanishvili co-founded the cooperative "Agroprogress," which initially focused on greenhouse construction but later shifted to the more lucrative electronics trade.
Banking Career
In 1989, Malkin became chairman of the board of the "Russian Credit" bank. He played a pivotal role in organizing the bank in 1990 and was appointed its president in 1994.
Political Involvement
From 2004 to 2013, Malkin served as a member of the Council of the Federation, representing the Republic of Buryatia. He held various positions within the Council, including Deputy Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs.
Philanthropy and Advocacy
Malkin established the charity foundation "Era" and held the position of vice-president of the Russian Jewish Congress from 1995 to 2008. He actively supported the Jewish community and spearheaded efforts to combat anti-Semitism.
Personal Life
Malkin is married and has six children. He currently resides in Monaco, holding both Russian and Israeli citizenship.
