Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo
Early Life and FamilyClaudia Sheinbaum Pardo was born in Mexico City to a Jewish family. Her paternal grandparents emigrated from Lithuania in the 1920s, while her maternal grandparents fled persecution in Bulgaria during the Holocaust in the early 1940s. Sheinbaum's parents were academics, an engineer and a biologist, and her brother is a physicist.
Academic Career
Sheinbaum earned her bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Her doctoral research focused on energy use in Mexican transportation, which she conducted at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California.
As an academic, Sheinbaum published extensively in scientific journals, became a researcher at UNAM's Engineering Institute, and was awarded the UNAM Young Researcher Award in Engineering and Technological Innovation.
Involvement with Climate Change Mitigation
In 2007, Sheinbaum joined the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a contributing author on climate change mitigation. The IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize that year, and Sheinbaum continued to co-author subsequent IPCC assessment reports.
Political Career
As a student at UNAM, Sheinbaum was active in the student council, which later formed the youth movement of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD). Appointed to the cabinet of Mexico City Mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2000, she served as Secretary of Environment for the city.
Sheinbaum broke away from the PRD in 2014 to join López Obrador's new National Regeneration Movement (MORENA). She held positions in López Obrador's proposed cabinet and later served as mayor of the Tlalpan district of Mexico City.
Mayor of Mexico City
In 2018, Sheinbaum was elected mayor of Mexico City, becoming the first woman and first Jewish person to hold the position. Her term began on July 1, 2018.
As mayor, Sheinbaum has implemented a series of ambitious policies, including:
- A six-year environmental plan to reduce air pollution, plant trees, ban single-use plastics, and expand public transportation.
- A 40 billion peso investment to modernize the Mexico City metro system.
- Expansion of social programs and infrastructure in marginalized neighborhoods.

Sheinbaum has been recognized globally for her leadership on environmental issues and gender equality. Notable accolades include:
