Early Career: From Roots to Pasos de FerreiraVittorio Antunes began his football journey with the modest club Freamaunde. Debuting in 2004, he spent two seasons in the second Portuguese division, honing his skills and garnering attention. In 2006, he joined Pacos de Ferreira as a free agent and quickly made a mark. His season was highlighted by a stunning goal that salvaged a draw against FC Porto, attracting interest from European powerhouses.
European Interest and Transfer to Roma
Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, and several other European clubs expressed interest in Antunes after his impressive campaign. Yet, it was Juventus who nearly secured his signature. However, the deal fell through, forcing his agents to seek alternative options.
On August 29, 2007, Antunes joined AS Roma on a one-year loan, with the Italian club having the option to purchase his contract. The transfer window closed two days later.
Limited Playing Time in Rome
Despite Roma's investment, Antunes faced limited playing opportunities due to competition from established defenders like Panucci and Cass etti. His debut came in December 2007 against Manchester United in the Champions League, where he was named Man of the Match.
The lack of playing time affected his chances of representing Portugal at Euro 2008, despite being a potential candidate.
Loan to Lecce and Return to Rome
In July 2008, Antunes was loaned to Lecce for the season. However, injuries plagued his campaign, restricting him to only 10 appearances. In 2009, he returned to Roma.
