Biography of Vittorio Claudio Surdo

Vittorio Claudio Surdo is an Italian diplomat who has had a distinguished career in various diplomatic positions. He was awarded the title of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2008.

Early Life and Education

Vittorio Claudio Surdo graduated from the University of Rome with a degree in Political Science in 1967.

Diplomatic Career

Surdo began his diplomatic career on April 7, 1970. He served as the Second Secretary at the Italian Embassy in Egypt (Cairo) from September 1, 1973. He then became the Deputy Consul in Paris, France, starting from May 1, 1976. On September 20, 1981, he was appointed as a counselor at the Embassy in Iran (Tehran).

In 1984, Surdo became the First Counselor at the Italian Embassy in Iran. He then served as a counselor at the Embassy in Germany (Bonn) from October 5, 1985. Surdo was promoted to the position of First Counselor at the Embassy in Germany on November 2, 1985.

On January 29, 1990, he became the Deputy Head of the Press and Information Service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy. From June 10, 1991, Surdo served as the Head of the First Department (political cooperation with European countries) at the Political Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy.

On June 1, 1992, Surdo was appointed as the Ambassador of Italy to Ukraine in Kyiv. He then became the Deputy Director of the Directorate-General for Cultural Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy on November 11, 1996.

Surdo served as the Head of a special diplomatic mission in Albania from June 12, 1997. On December 11, 1997, he became the Head of the Department of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy. From July 5, 1999, Surdo held the position of Ambassador of Italy to Turkey in Ankara.

On February 1, 2004, Surdo was appointed as the Director-General of the Personnel Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy. Starting from April 19, 2006, he served as the Ambassador of Italy to the Russian Federation in Moscow and, concurrently, to Turkmenistan in Ashgabat.

Awards and Honors

Vittorio Claudio Surdo has received several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1995, he was appointed as a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. In 2004, he became a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and in 2008, he was awarded the title of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

In addition, Surdo has been honored by the Ukrainian government with the Order of Merit of the 1st degree in 1996 for his significant personal contribution to the development of favorable Italo-Ukrainian relations.

Vittorio Claudio Surdo and his wife are actively involved in philanthropy, particularly in providing assistance to severely ill children residing in the orphanage No. 1 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
