Vittorio De Seta: A Sicilian Cinematographer

Early Life and Aristocratic Roots

Born on October 15, 1923, in Palermo, Sicily, Vittorio De Seta hailed from an illustrious Calabrian family. He spent his youth in the aristocratic circles of Palermo before moving to Rome.

Service and Imprisonment

De Seta served in the Italian Navy and was imprisoned in a German concentration camp from 1943 to 1945 for refusing to join the military forces of the Republic of Salò.

Entry into Cinema

In 1953, De Seta began his career in cinema as second assistant director to Mario Chiari on the film "Love Stories of the First Century."

Rebellion against "Official" Cinema

Dissatisfied with the conventions of mainstream cinema, De Seta left and collaborated with Vito Pandolfi on the documentary "Easter in Sicily" (1954). This marked a break from the established cinematic norms.
