Biography of Brad Silberling
Brad Silberling is an American film and television director. He was born in Washington, District of Columbia, USA, into a family of television producers. Silberling studied film at the UCLA Film School, where he began his career in the entertainment industry even before completing his education.
Early Career
In 1986, Silberling became a producer's assistant on a children's television program, which marked the beginning of his television and film career. His short film "Repairs," which he wrote and directed, caught the attention of Universal Studios agents, leading to his first contract. Although he was unable to complete his planned feature film, his impressive attempt once again attracted attention. This time, television producer Steven Bochco took notice of Silberling and hired him as his assistant. Silberling worked on various well-known series, including "NYPD Blue," "L.A. Law," "Doogie Howser, M.D.," "Civil Wars," and "The Byrds of Paradise."
Breakthrough
During his work on the series "Brooklyn Bridge," Silberling caught the eye of Steven Spielberg. Spielberg gave Silberling the opportunity to work on his first feature film, "Casper," a famous story about a friendly ghost. The success of the film confirmed Spielberg's choice, and Silberling was soon offered a more significant project. This project was the film adaptation of "City of Angels," an Americanized version of Wim Wenders' "Wings of Desire." Once again, Silberling's work was well-received by audiences.
Television Success
After the success of "City of Angels," Silberling chose to continue working in television, directing shows such as "Felicity" and "Judging Amy." During this time, he was romantically involved with actress Rebecca Schaeffer, who starred in the series "My Sister Sam." Unfortunately, Schaeffer was tragically killed by an obsessed fan in 1989. Silberling later used his memories of Schaeffer and the story of her death to create the screenplay for "Moonlight Mile." The film, directed by Silberling, was released in 2002 and starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, and Susan Sarandon. "Moonlight Mile" remains one of Silberling's most successful projects to date.
Personal Life and Recent Work
In 1995, Silberling married actress Amy Brenneman, whom he met while working on "NYPD Blue." They have two children together named Charlotte Tucker and Bodhi Russell. In 2006, Silberling's film "10 Items or Less" became the first movie to be legally downloaded from the internet before its theatrical release, thanks to his close relationship with Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary, the owners of the "ClickStar" project.
