Ukrainian Archeologist
Early Life and EducationMyroslav Volokhin was born in western Ukraine. He graduated from Rogatyn Pedagogical College in 1946 and earned a higher historical education from Lviv Pedagogical Institute in 1950.
Career
Early CareerVolokhin began his career in 1951 as head of a state archive department in Lviv. From 1953 to 1967, he served as a research associate at the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv.
Academic Appointments
In 1967-1969, Volokhin was an associate professor at the Department of History of Ukraine at Lviv University. Since 1969, he has been employed at the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (later renamed the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). He has held the positions of deputy director and acting director, and since 1974, he has headed the department of Slavic archeology, which he founded.
Editor and Scholar
In the early 1970s, Volokhin was editor of the quarterly "Archeology." He obtained his doctorate in historical sciences in 1973 and became a professor. In 1991, he was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology for his monograph "Slavs of Southeastern Europe in the Pre-State Period."
Member and Correspondent
In 1995, Volokhin became a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and an honorary corresponding member of the German Archeological Institute. Since 2000, he has been a professor at the Department of Archeology, Antiquity, and the Middle Ages at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
Research Interests
Volokhin's research focuses on the origins of Slavic peoples, early Slavic history, and ethnocultural processes in Eastern Europe in the first millennium AD.
