Early Life and Education

Vasily Mikhailovich Efretov was a Ukrainian scientist, surgeon, and professor born on January 1, 1924, in Simferopol. He distinguished himself academically, earning a gold medal upon graduating from Simferopol Secondary School No. 11 in 1944. The same year, he enrolled at the Crimean Medical Institute, graduating with honors in 1949. His passion for surgery emerged during his third year of medical studies.

Surgical Career and Academic Achievements

After graduating, Efretov was assigned to Orel, where he worked as a surgeon until 1954. Upon returning to Simferopol, he joined the newly established oncology clinic. Through his tireless efforts, he played a pivotal role in establishing comprehensive oncology services in Crimea, introducing innovative diagnostic techniques and surgical interventions, particularly in gastrointestinal and pancreatic surgery.

In 1968, Efretov successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, "Ways to Improve the Surgical Treatment Outcomes for Gastric Cancer," under the guidance of renowned scientist Nikolai N. Blokhin. In 1981, he further cemented his academic credentials with another doctoral dissertation, "Precancerous Diseases and Cancer of the Operated Stomach."

Establishment of the Cancer Center

Efretov's commitment to cancer care was instrumental in the construction of a new oncology clinic in Simferopol in 1981, now known as the Republican Clinical Oncology Dispensary. In 1982, he became the Head of the Department of Oncology at the Crimean State Medical University, a position he held until 2006.

Research and Publications

Efretov's research focused on diagnosing and treating malignant tumors of the digestive tract, lungs, and breast. He also explored pain management, reconstructive surgery, and plastic surgery techniques. His prolific career resulted in over 120 scientific publications, including two influential monographs. Under his supervision, eleven candidates and one doctor of science successfully defended their dissertations.

Professional Affiliations and Recognition

Efretov served as a member of the editorial board of the journal "Voprosy Onkologii" (St. Petersburg, Russia) from 1968 and "Onkolohiya" (Kyiv, Ukraine) from 2000. He actively participated in the Presidium of the Board of the Scientific Society of Oncologists of Ukraine and the Oncology Problem Commission under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. From 1967 to 2006, he led the Crimean Scientific Society of Oncologists.

Honors and Awards

Efretov's exceptional contributions to medicine have been widely recognized. He received numerous accolades, including the Honored Doctor and Honored Scientist of Ukraine and Crimea, Order of the Badge of Honor, and a laureateship from the Ministry of Health of the USSR. In 2004, he was bestowed the prestigious title of Honorary Citizen of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

Autobiography

Efretov's life and experiences are vividly recounted in his autobiography, "The Life of a Surgeon," published in 2008. The book's cover features a gold scalpel, a special honor awarded to him by the Society of Oncologists of Ukraine in 2003 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Crimean Clinical Oncology Dispensary.
