Country: Kazakhstan

Biography of Vladimir Kim

Vladimir Kim, the largest producer of copper, silver, and gold in Kazakhstan, was born and raised in South Kazakhstan. He graduated from a construction university and began his career in the construction industry during the Soviet era. However, after Kazakhstan became an independent republic, Kim interned in Germany, Switzerland, and South Korea. He holds a PhD in business and administrative management, which he obtained in the United States in 1998.

Kim's career in leadership roles began much earlier. He served as an instructor for the party in Almaty and as the deputy chairman of the district executive committee during the restructuring period and the early years of independence. He was also entrusted with leading the Fund for Cultural, Social, and Scientific-Technical Development of Kazakhstan, which was closely linked to the country's top leadership.

In August 1997, Kim took over as the head of the Kazakhmys Corporation, which is now credited with almost half of the shares in the copper giant Corporation "Kazakhmys." Prior to this, from 1995 to 1997, he led Jezkazgancvetmet JSC, and from 1992 to 1995, he led Kazakhstan-Samsung joint venture.

Kim's leadership abilities and his ability to think both in a Soviet and Western manner have been crucial for the new Kazakhstan. In November 2002, he joined the political council of the Otan party, indicating his close ties to the ruling elite of Kazakhstan, who control the company through offshore firms.

The success of Kazakhstan is closely tied to the development of high-tech industries, despite its vast oil resources. The country already has much to be proud of, including its status as a market economy, which it obtained earlier than Russia. Foreign investors have shown great interest in Kazakhstan, with over 800 joint ventures with foreign participation and a total turnover of approximately $600 million. Chevron, British Gas, Agip, Mobil, Daewoo, and Samsung are among the largest and most efficient foreign partners.

Kim's leadership of Kazakhmys has been instrumental in the revival of the country's copper industry, with significant investments in the sector. The corporation is currently the ninth-largest producer of cathode copper in the world, as well as the fifth-largest producer of silver and a producer of high-quality gold, zinc, copper wire, and enamel wire.

In 2005, Kazakhmys successfully conducted an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange, raising £661 million ($1.2 billion) for a 25% stake in the company. Kim, along with the general manager of Kazakhmys, Jong Kyu Cha, and the financial director, Oleg Novachuk, retained significant stakes in the company.

Kim's leadership has transformed Kazakhmys into a socially-oriented company that contributes significantly to the local communities. The corporation plays a vital role in the development of three cities and several towns where its operations are located. It invests in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other social projects, ensuring the well-being of its employees and the communities it serves.

With his wealth and success, Kim has become one of the richest individuals in Kazakhstan. His dedication to professional management and his ability to navigate both the domestic and international markets have contributed to the growth and success of Kazakhmys.
