Biography of Valery Mamontov
Early Life and EducationValery Mamontov was born on December 21, 1952, in Vladivostok, Russia. He graduated from the Far Eastern State University, majoring in journalism.
Career in Journalism
Mamontov's career in journalism began at the "Krasnoe Znamya" regional newspaper in Vladivostok, where he held various positions, including science correspondent, head of the culture department, and head of the propaganda department.
He later became a special correspondent for the "Sovetskaya Rossiya" newspaper in Khabarovsk.
"Komsomolskaya Pravda"
From 1990 to 1997, Mamontov worked at the "Komsomolskaya Pravda" newspaper. He held various positions, including deputy editor of the propaganda and military-patriotic education department, editor of the literature and arts department, executive secretary, and, from 1994, editor-in-chief of the Friday issue.
"Izvestia"
In November 2005, Mamontov was appointed editor-in-chief of the "Izvestia" newspaper. His appointment was part of a broader change in ownership and editorial policy at the newspaper, which had been acquired by the "Gazprom-Media" company.
Editorial Philosophy
Mamontov's editorial philosophy for "Izvestia" has been characterized by its emphasis on national unity, moderation, and dialogue. In a 2006 memorandum to the newspaper's staff, he declared that "Izvestia" should not be an opposition newspaper, but should reflect the entire spectrum of public opinion.
