Early Life and Education
Vladimir Pakhomov was born on September 6, 1935, in Moscow. His father, Nikolai Sidorovich Pakhomov, was born in 1909 and died in 1952. His mother, Antonina Vasilevna Pakhomova, was born in 1907 and died in 1984.
Career as a Sports Journalist
Early CareerPakhomov began his career as a sports journalist in 1957 after winning a contest hosted by the newspaper "Vechernyaya Moskva" for the best report on a football match between the Moscow teams "Spartak" and "Dynamo."
"Soviet Sport" and Overseas Assignments
In October 1959, Pakhomov joined the staff of "Soviet Sport." As a correspondent for the newspaper, he covered major sporting events both in the USSR and abroad, including the World Peace Race, the Olympic Games in Innsbruck (1964) and Munich (1972), and the Ice Hockey World and European Championships.
Travel Prohibition and Return to Foreign Assignments
In 1975, Pakhomov was prohibited from traveling abroad due to his outspoken nature. In 1986, however, he was appointed as head of the second Soviet national ice hockey team for an international tournament in Czechoslovakia.
Publications and Recognition
Pakhomov's work appeared in numerous publications, including "Vechernyaya Moskva," "Soviet Sport," and central newspapers such as "Pravda" and "Komsomolskaya Pravda." He also authored several books, including a biography of the legendary hockey player Vsevolod Bobrov.
Federation Hockey USSR
Pakhomov was elected several times to the presidium of the Federation Hockey USSR and was accredited to various international hockey championships. He received the Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" 2nd Degree for his contributions to domestic hockey.
Other Interests and Honors
In addition to sports, Pakhomov also wrote about military affairs, meeting with prominent military commanders and astronauts.
He was awarded the Medal "For Labor Distinction" for his coverage of the 1980 Olympic Games, and the title of Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR. Pakhomov also received the Olympic Committee of Russia's Honorary Badge "For Services in the Development of the Olympic Movement in Russia" and the Honorary Badge "For Services in the Development of Physical Culture and Sport."
Personal Life
Vladimir Pakhomov married Lidia Nikolaevna Pakhomova in 1943. They have a son, Nikolai Vladimirovich Pakhomov, born in 1982, who is a graduate of the Faculty of Political Science at MGIMO.
