Nigel Starmer-Smith: Rugby Journalist and Commentator
Early Life and EducationNigel Starmer-Smith was born in Britain and received his education at Magdalen College School, Oxford, and University College, Oxford. After completing his studies, he briefly worked for a shipping management firm before dedicating himself to his rugby career.
Rugby Career
Starmer-Smith played as a hooker for Oxford University while studying at University College, Oxford. He later joined Harlequins as a senior player and retired from the sport in 1975-76. In 1966-67, during his time at Oxford, he was selected to play for the British and Irish Lions, an elite rugby team. In 1969, he represented England against the touring South African team.
Non-Playing Career and Journalism
Towards the end of the 1960s, Starmer-Smith taught geography at Epsom College. He later became the editor of Rugby World magazine and presented Rugby Special on the BBC for 15 years. Additionally, he provided commentary on Olympic hockey for the BBC but was replaced by Barry Davies during the 1988 Olympic final. In 2003, he worked as a commentator for ITV Sport during the Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Starmer-Smith also served as a lead television commentator for the IRB Sevens World Series and became a lead columnist for UR7s.com, a global rugby-7 portal. In March 2021, his son announced that Starmer-Smith had been living with frontotemporal dementia for several years and was residing in a care home.
