Early Life and Education
Vladimir Remek was born on September 26, 1948, in České Budějovice, Czechoslovakia. His mother was Czech, while his father was a Slovak general in the air force. In 1963, he graduated from a nine-year school in Brno and continued his education at a secondary school in Čáslav, where he excelled in physics and mathematics.
Military and Flight Training
From 1966 to 1970, Remek attended the military officer's academy in Košice, Slovakia. He then served in the Czechoslovak Air Force, becoming a qualified pilot. In 1972, he enrolled in the Yuri Gagarin Air Force Academy in Moscow, graduating in 1974.
Cosmonaut Selection and Training
In 1976, Remek was selected as a cosmonaut under the Intercosmos program, a Soviet collaboration with other nations. He underwent intensive training for a year, preparing for flight aboard the Soyuz spacecraft and the Salyut space station.
Historic Spaceflight
On March 2, 1978, Remek became the first non-Soviet or American to reach space. As a cosmonaut-researcher on the Soyuz-28 mission, he docked with the Salyut-6 space station. Together with the station crew, Remek conducted experiments for Soviet and Czechoslovak scientists. He spent seven days, 22 hours, 16 minutes, and 30 seconds in space.
Post-Spaceflight Career
After his historic flight, Remek worked as the deputy director of a scientific research institute in Prague. He later joined the political division of the Czechoslovak People's Army and taught at the General Staff Academy in Moscow. From 1990 to 1995, he was the director of the aviation and astronautics museum in Prague. Subsequently, he worked for joint Russian-Czech enterprises in Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow.
Political and Diplomatic Roles
In 2004, Remek was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia. He participated in the Committee on Industry and Energy and the Committee on EU-Russian Federation Cooperation.
Honors and Recognition
Remek's accomplishments were widely recognized. He received the titles of Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Czechoslovak Order of Klement Gottwald, and the Gold Medal of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. An asteroid (2552 Remek) was named in his honor.
