Early Life and Education
Vladimir Samofalov was born on October 27, 1927, in Zolotonosha, Ukraine. His father, Dmitry, was a railway worker who died in the Great Patriotic War. His mother, Efrosiinya, worked at a sugar factory. After the outbreak of the war, Vladimir and his mother were evacuated.
At the age of 16, Vladimir worked as a manual driller for the Geological Reconnaissance Expedition "Lentransproject" in Kazakhstan. He attempted to enroll in the Frunze Higher Naval School in Baku but was not accepted. Instead, he graduated from a local torpedo school.
Military Service
Vladimir enlisted in the Soviet Navy in 1944 and served on the Baltic Fleet. He participated in the storming of Tallinn and received the rank of Captain 1st Rank upon his demobilization in 1946.
Journalism and Public Service
Following his military service, Vladimir pursued a career in journalism. He worked as an instructor, responsible secretary, and editor for a district newspaper in Dрогобыch Oblast. He was later invited to work as a correspondent for the republican newspaper "Pravda Ukrainy."
In 1951, Vladimir moved to Bukovina, where he held positions as editor of the district newspaper in Khotyn, responsible secretary of an inter-district newspaper in Kelmentsi, and scientific researcher at the Chernivtsi State Regional Museum. He also served as director of the Khotyn Museum.
Later Years and Accolades
Vladimir completed his education at the Kamenets-Podolsky Agricultural Institute in 1965 and the Pedagogical Faculty of the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy in 1969. He worked in various roles, including a miner, economist, teacher, and newspaper editor.
Vladimir was a member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (USSR) from 1975. He was elected to the Khotyn City Council four times, held positions in cultural heritage preservation organizations, and served as chairman of the Khotyn city veterans' organization.
He received numerous awards, including the Order of the Patriotic War II Degree, Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III Degree, Order of Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir, and the Republican Union of Journalists of Ukraine "Golden Pen" Award.
Legacy
Vladimir Samofalov passed away on May 5, 2019, at the age of 92. He left behind a legacy of service to journalism, public administration, and cultural history.
