Walter Cronkite: The Legendary American Journalist
Walter Cronkite, the oldest American journalist and former anchor on CBS, joined the network in 1950 and became the lead news anchor in 1962. He soon gained popularity as the "trusted man” who was respected by all. Cronkite's documentary film about the Vietnam War, which he directed in 1968, brought him even greater fame. In this film, the journalist declared the necessity of withdrawing American troops from the country as the United States could not win the war. Throughout his career, he covered significant events such as the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., the Watergate scandal, the moon landing, the hostage crisis at the American embassy in Iran, and many others, as reported by AP.
Cronkite was not only the greatest news anchor in history, who was trusted by all, but he also guided America through times of crises and tragedies, victories, and the greatest moments, said Sean McManus, the president of CBS News and Sports, as quoted by AFP. Cronkite stopped anchoring the news in 1981 but remained a part of the television network until his last days. He appeared on the screen very rarely in his later years.
