Vladimir Volkov was born into a family of Russian descent. According to the player himself, his great-grandparents resided in Moscow before 1917, later migrating to Serbia.

January 2009 marked a significant moment in Volkov's career as he signed for Sheriff Tiraspol. With the Moldovan club, he lifted the Commonwealth Cup trophy in 2009, including a crucial penalty conversion in the final against Kazakhstan's Aktobe.
