Early Life and Education
Nikolai Ziatkov was born on February 28, 1940, in Tomsk, Russia, to a military family. In 1962, he graduated from the Machine-Building Institute in Rostov-on-Don, where he specialized in electronic engineering. While working as a senior engineer at the Hydrometeorological Center in Moscow, he continued his education, graduating from the Faculty of Journalism at Rostov State University in 1973.
Journalism Career
After completing his studies, Ziatkov embarked on a journalistic career. He worked as a correspondent for the radio programs of USSR State Television and Radio from 1973 to 1977. From 1977 to 1979, he served as a senior research fellow at the publishing house "Znaniye." In 1979, he became head of the editorial board at the publishing house "International Relations."
Argunменты i Fakty
In 1980, Ziatkov was appointed editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper "Argunменты i Fakty" (Arguments and Facts). Under his leadership, the newspaper became the most widely read and circulated publication in Russia. In 2002, he took on the role of editor-in-chief of the weekly.
Political Involvement
Ziatkov was a member of the Russian parliament (People's Deputy of the RSFSR and later the Russian Federation) from 1990 to 1993. He also served on the Public Supervisory Council of ORTV, a Russian television channel, from 1998 to 2002.
