Vladimír Picek: Czech Army Chief of Staff
Early Life and EducationVladimír Picek, a Czech native, was born on October 25, 1956, in the northern Bohemian town of Turnov. His military education began in 1975 at the military academy in Nové Město nad Váhom, Central Slovakia. From 1978 to 1982, he attended the Czechoslovak Army Academy in Brno, South Moravia. After completing the academy, he underwent a one-year specialization course in military intelligence, which he finished in 1983.
Military Career
Picek has held various positions throughout his military career. From 1996 to 1997, he served as the commander of communications forces. In May 2003, he was appointed chief of the military office of the Czech President, which he held until March 2007. In 1997, he completed the Higher General Staff Course at the Military Academy in Brno.
Chief of Staff Appointment
Lieutenant General Vladimír Picek was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Army in 2007. He became the 23rd Chief of Staff in the history of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic.
Responsibilities
As Chief of Staff, Picek is responsible for leading the Czech Army and overseeing its operations. He is also involved in critical decisions, such as consent for the deployment of US missile defense systems in the Czech Republic.
Personal Life
Picek is married and has two sons. An avid sportsman, he enjoys playing tennis, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing.
