- Born into a merchant family in Penza, Russia, as Karl Theodor Kasimir.
- Received his artistic influences from his parents' love for theater and music.
- Participated in amateur theater during his education, playing significant roles under the pseudonym Ukhtomsky.

Education and Theatre Beginnings
- Studied at Moscow University but maintained connections with Penza.- Married Olga M. Munt in 1896.
- Joined the Moscow Art Theatre, playing various roles until 1902.
- Headed the "New Drama Society" and toured with his theatre in Penza (1904).
Formation of His Artistic Program
