Biography of Jerzy Hoffman
Jerzy Hoffman was a Polish film director and screenwriter. He was born into a family of Polish Jews, who were deported to Siberia after 1939. His father, a doctor by profession, volunteered for the first division of the Polish Army named after Kosciuszko, which was formed in the USSR. After the war, Jerzy Hoffman returned to Poland and studied in Bydgoszcz. In 1955, he graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, USSR, and made his directorial debut the same year.

Jerzy Hoffman is most well-known for his film adaptations of Henryk Sienkiewicz's novels. He directed four films based on Sienkiewicz's works, in three of which he played himself and in two he served as the narrator. Hoffman received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was made an honorary citizen of Bydgoszcz in 2003. He was also a laureate of several international film competitions and was awarded prizes by the Polish Ministry of Culture. In addition, he was honored with the Order of Merit of the 3rd degree by Ukraine.

In 1965, Jerzy Hoffman married Valentina Trachtenberg from Kyiv, with whom he remained married until her death in 1998. The film "With Fire and Sword" is dedicated to her. Hoffman's personal life and marriage had a significant influence on his work and artistic choices.
