Biography of Walter Bagehot
Early Life and EducationWalter Bagehot was a British businessman, economist, author, and journalist. He studied at University College London, where he graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1848. His father, Thomas Walter Bagehot, was the managing director and vice chairman of Stuckey's Banking Company.
Career in Banking and Journalism
After completing his studies, Bagehot joined his father's banking company instead of pursuing a career in law. However, he also wrote for various publications, and soon his name became known as the editor of 'The Economist' newspaper. He left 'The Economist' in 1861 and began writing about politics. His opinions became highly respected, and politicians started to take notice of his views.
Notable Works
In 1867, Bagehot gained significant recognition for his book 'The English Constitution,' which delved into the political mechanisms of Great Britain. He explored the nature of the United Kingdom's Constitution, extensively discussing the activities of Parliament and the British monarchy. The book also included a comparative analysis of the British and American government systems. 'The English Constitution' was translated into multiple languages and later became a classic.
Bagehot was also known for his work 'Physics and Politics,' published in 1872, as well as his book 'Lombard Street,' published in 1873. In the latter, Bagehot examined the world of finance and banking, with a particular focus on crisis management. His observations remain relevant to this day, especially in the context of the global financial crisis that erupted in 2007. Numerous biographical and economic essays by Bagehot were published posthumously, covering a wide range of topics from Shakespeare to silver prices.
Legacy and Recognition
As a mark of respect and recognition for his contributions, 'The Economist' named its weekly column on British politics 'Bagehot.' Additionally, the British Political Studies Association awards the 'Walter Bagehot Prize' annually to the author of the best dissertation in the field of government and public administration.
