Walter Brandmüller: German Prelate, Theologian, and Historian
Early Life and EducationWalter Brandmüller was born on January 5, 1929, in Ansbach, Germany, to a Protestant family. He converted to Roman Catholicism during his adolescence. Brandmüller studied history at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, earning his doctorate in 1963 and his habilitation in 1967.
Priesthood and Academic Career
On July 26, 1953, Brandmüller was ordained a priest in Bamberg. He served as a pastor in several parishes before continuing his studies in Munich. In 1969, he became a professor at the University of Dillingen, and from 1970 to 1997, he taught church history at the University of Augsburg. Brandmüller was also the parish priest of the Assumption of Mary in Walleshausen from 1971 to 1998.
Ecclesiastical Service
As an expert in church council history, Brandmüller founded and edited the journal "Annuarium conciliorum historiae" and the series "Konziliengeschichte." He also edited the "Handbook of Bavarian Church History." From 1981 to 1998, he served as a member of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences and was appointed a Prelate of Honor of His Holiness in 1983.
Episcopal and Cardinalate
In 2010, Brandmüller was appointed titular archbishop of Caesarea in Mauretania and consecrated a bishop. Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to the College of Cardinals on November 20, 2010, as a cardinal deacon with the titular church of San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi. As he was over eighty years old at the time of his appointment, Brandmüller is ineligible to vote in papal conclaves.
