A Miraculous Journey to Work
Midnight Trek for a New JobWalter Carr, a 20-year-old pre-med student, faced a daunting challenge on his first day at work. His aging Nissan Altima had given out, and despite reaching out to friends and his girlfriend, no one could provide a ride. Undeterred, Carr determined that it would take seven hours to walk the 20 miles from Homewood to Pelham, Alabama, where his new employer, Bellhops, was located.
Police Assistance and Determination
With no other options, Carr embarked on his 20-mile trek around midnight, determined to arrive at work before 8 am and show Bellhops his commitment. At 4 am, while walking along the side of the road still 14 miles from Pelham, he was stopped by police officers. Astonished by his story, the officers offered him breakfast at a Whataburger and provided him with snacks for the rest of his journey.
Respite and a Surprising Encounter
After continuing his walk, Carr was met by another police car less than four miles from his destination. Upon confirming his identity, the officer offered him a ride to the home of Jenny Hayden Lamy, the woman he was scheduled to help load and move on his first day of work.
A Viral Post and Recognition
Lamy, impressed by Carr's determination, shared his story on Facebook, where it quickly went viral. Her post caught the attention of Luke Marklin, CEO of Bellhops. Moved by Carr's perseverance, Marklin arranged to meet the new employee and reward him.
A Generous Gift
On July 16, 2018, Marklin presented Carr with a Ford Escape, a gesture of gratitude for his unwavering work ethic. Lamy also initiated a GoFundMe campaign, which raised over $8500 in its first day.
A Long-lasting Impact
Carr remains humbled by the outpouring of support and cannot believe the impact his midnight trek has had. Despite finishing his first day feeling exhausted, he remains grateful for the opportunities that have come his way. His determination and resilience have left a lasting impression on those he has encountered.
