Biography of Walter Fredericks
Walter Fredericks was a renowned American opera tenor and concert performer whose career spanned from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Born in Camden, New Jersey, Fredericks initially worked as a mechanic before his friends convinced him to audition at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, where he was awarded a scholarship.
Early Career and Opera Success
Fredericks began his opera career in 1947 at the San Francisco Opera, impressing maestro Gaetano Merola, the conductor and founder of the San Francisco Opera. Merola persuaded the opera patrons to grant Fredericks a scholarship to study in Italy for a year. Upon his return to the United States, Fredericks performed with leading opera companies across the country, including the Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and New York City opera houses. He was also a guest soloist with numerous American symphony orchestras and appeared on radio, television, and in films.
National and International Performances
Fredericks gained popularity with his performances in New Jersey, Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, Dearborn, Kansas City, Tucson, and various cities in California. He toured in Canada, Mexico, and Latin America. During his tours in the United States, he frequently performed spiritual music programs in churches and seminaries. Fredericks had a repertoire of over thirty opera roles, including Pinkerton in Puccini's "Madama Butterfly," Pollione in Bellini's "Norma," Canio in Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci," Ismaele in Verdi's "Nabucco," Cassio in Verdi's "Otello," Alfredo in Verdi's "La traviata," Manrico in Verdi's "Il trovatore," Don Jose in Bizet's "Carmen," and Avito in Italo Montemezzi's "L'amore dei tre re."
Legacy and Christmas Carolfest
In the mid-1970s, Fredericks initiated the annual Christmas Carolfest in Ocean City, New Jersey, which he led for several years until his passing.
