Club Career
Walter Gargano began his professional career at Danubio in 2003. During his four years with the Uruguayan club, he won two championship titles. In 2007, he was acquired by Napoli for £2 million.
Napoli
Gargano faced a conflict with Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri in 2010/11, but the issue was eventually resolved. In 2012, he played a vital role in Napoli's Coppa Italia triumph, despite missing the final due to suspension.
Loans and Parma
Gargano spent the 2012/13 season on loan at Inter Milan. After returning to Napoli, he was loaned to Parma in 2013/14.
Monterrey and Return to Penarol
From 2015 to 2017, Gargano featured for Mexican club Monterrey. He was part of the Clausura championship's symbolic team in 2016. In July 2017, he rejoined Penarol.
International Career
Gargano made his Uruguay debut in 2005. He played in the 2007 Copa America and the 2010 World Cup, where Uruguay finished fourth. Gargano became a regular starter in 2011 and impressed in a friendly against Germany, scoring the only goal for Uruguay. In 2013, he recorded three assists at the Confederations Cup, finishing as the tournament's top assistant. Gargano retired from international football after the 2014 World Cup.
Personal Life
Gargano is married to Michaela Hamsik, a relative of former teammate Marek Hamsik. They have two sons, Matias and Thiago.
