Cardinal Walter Kasper
Walter Kasper is a German Cardinal who served as Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart from 1989 to 1999 and President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity from 2001 to 2010.
Early Life and Ordination
Kasper was born on March 3, 1933, in Heidenheim an der Brenz, Germany. He studied philosophy and theology in Tübingen and Munich and was ordained a priest on April 6, 1957.
Academic Career
Kasper taught theology at the University of Tübingen and the University of Münster. In 1969, he became Dean of the Faculty of Theology at Münster. He served as professor of dogmatic theology and Dean of the Faculty of Theology at Tübingen from 1970 onwards.
Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart
Kasper was appointed Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart on April 4, 1989. He was ordained Bishop on June 17, 1989.
Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity
In 1999, Kasper was appointed Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. In 2001, he became its President.
Cardinalate
Kasper was created a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II on February 21, 2001, with the title of Cardinal-Deacon of All Saints on the New Appian Way. He participated in the 2005 Conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI.
Resignation and Retirement
Kasper reached the age of 75 on March 5, 2008, and submitted his resignation as President of the Pontifical Council. He retired from his post on July 1, 2010.
Liberal Perspectives
Kasper is known for his liberal views on ecumenism and is considered a member of the "liberal" group within the College of Cardinals.
