Early Life and College Career

Walter Payton, born on July 25, 1954, in Columbia, Mississippi, was a skilled athlete from a young age. He participated in band, chorus, and jazz music before joining his high school football team, where he excelled as a running back despite his diminutive stature.

Despite his athletic prowess, Payton did not receive a scholarship to a major college due to enrollment quotas for Black athletes. He enrolled at Jackson State University, a historically Black college, where he joined a team that included Jerome Barkum and Jackie Slater. Payton earned a bachelor's degree in communications in 1975 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996.

NFL Career with the Chicago Bears

Payton was drafted fourth overall by the Chicago Bears in 1975. He quickly became a star, setting numerous NFL records for yards rushing, touchdowns, and carries. He was named NFL Player of the Year twice and led the Bears to a victory in Super Bowl XX in 1985.

Payton played 13 seasons with the Bears, missing only one game due to injury. He became an icon of the team and was revered for his determination and leadership. Payton retired in 1987 as one of the greatest halfbacks in NFL history.

Personal Life and Impact

Off the field, Payton was known for his philanthropy and advocacy for organ donation. He married Connie Norwood in 1976, and they had two children. Payton's life was cut short at the age of 45 when he succumbed to a rare liver disease.
