Born in Miami, Florida on January 9, 1978, Chad Javon Johnson, known as Chad Ochocinco, is an American football player who plays as a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL).

From College to the NFL

Ochocinco attended Miami Beach High School before enrolling at Langston University, a historically black college in Oklahoma, in 1996. He later transferred to Santa Monica College in California in 1997, where he became teammates with future Carolina Panthers star Steve Smith. In 2000, Ochocinco joined Oregon State University, leading the team to an 11-1 record and a victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. He also set the school record for the longest touchdown reception (97 yards) against Stanford University.

Ochocinco was drafted in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. As a rookie, he had 28 receptions for 329 yards and one touchdown. In 2003, he set a Bengals single-season record with 1,355 receiving yards.

NFL Stardom and Pro Bowl Selections

Ochocinco continued to impress, setting a new single-season Bengals record in 2004 with 1,274 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He also had 117 yards receiving in a 58-48 victory over the Cleveland Browns. In 2005, he broke his own record, extending it to 1,432 yards. From 2003 to 2007, Ochocinco made five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances.

Breaking Records and Fan Favorite

Ochocinco's contract with the Bengals was extended through 2011 on April 20, 2006. While facing an injury-plagued season early on in 2006, he rebounded with a stellar performance against the San Diego Chargers, accumulating 260 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The following week, he had 190 receiving yards and three touchdowns in a 31-16 victory over the New Orleans Saints. With a combined 450 receiving yards, Ochocinco broke the previous NFL record of 448 yards set by San Francisco receiver John Taylor in 1989.

Not only is Ochocinco one of the NFL's most productive receivers, but he is also one of its most popular. He finished fourth in fan voting for the NFL's 2006 Pro Bowl MVP. In August 2006, he was ranked first on Fox Sports' list of the top 50 active athletes in all professional sports.

Later Career and Retirement

Before the 2009 season, Ochocinco drew the interest of the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants after skipping the Bengals' offseason workouts. However, he remained with the team and had his seventh career 1,000-yard receiving season. He finished with 72 receptions for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns, falling just 48 yards short of the 10,000-yard career mark.

On March 1, 2010, Ochocinco was selected as a celebrity contestant on the tenth season of the popular reality show "Dancing with the Stars." He retired from the NFL in 2012 after 11 seasons with the Bengals.

Ochocinco is a two-time First-Team All-Pro (2005, 2006), Second-Team All-Pro (2003), and six-time Pro Bowl selection (2003-2007, 2009). He holds numerous Cincinnati Bengals franchise records and is considered one of the most prolific wide receivers in NFL history.
