Early Life and FamilyHumberto Sousa Campos, known as Vampeta, was born in a poverty-stricken neighborhood of São Luís, Brazil. He was the youngest of ten children, with five sisters and four brothers. His father was a farmer, while his mother worked as a seamstress. Vampeta's eldest brother, 19 years older, also contributed to the family's income as a police officer.
Club Career
Vampeta began his football journey with the youth teams of São Luís and Sampaio Corrêa. In 1991, he moved to Belgium to join Cercle Brugge, where he spent two years in their youth setup.
In 1993, Vampeta made his senior debut for Cercle Brugge. He played 33 matches and scored 8 goals in his first season in the Belgian First Division. He remained with the club for five seasons, amassing 86 appearances and 13 goals.
In 1996, Vampeta transferred to Standard Liège, another Belgian club. After two seasons, he joined Dutch giants Ajax for a transfer fee of 5 million guilders, signing a five-year contract.
Vampeta's Ajax debut came on August 16, 1998, in the Dutch Super Cup against PSV Eindhoven. He won the Dutch Eredivisie and KNVB Cup in his first season with the club.
However, after Ronald Koeman took over as manager in 2002, Vampeta lost his place in the starting eleven. He made only 10 appearances and scored 1 goal in the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons.
After five years with Ajax, in which he played 111 matches and scored 26 goals, Vampeta was loaned to Belgian club Mons. Upon the loan's expiration in 2004, he rejoined Standard Liège, where he had previously spent two seasons.
Vampeta failed to establish himself as a regular starter in his second stint with Standard Liège, making 28 appearances and scoring only 1 goal over two seasons.
In 2006, Vampeta signed for Mons. He made 17 appearances and scored 2 goals for the Belgian side in the 2006/07 season.
Vampeta then returned to the Netherlands to play for Omniworld, his final club.

Personal Life
Vampeta became a father at the age of 15. His wife's name is Rosana, and they have three sons.
His eldest son, Danilo Souza Campos, joined Ajax's academy in 2007 and currently plays for Turkish club Antalyaspor.
Vampeta's youngest son, Wanderson, signed for Krasnodar in 2017 after stints with Lierse and Beerschot.
