Biography of Warren Jeffs
Warren Steed Jeffs was born in 1955 in San Francisco, California. His father, Rulon Jeffs, was the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS Church). After his father's death, Warren became the president of the church. He surpassed his father's record of having multiple wives, eventually having 78 wives, with 24 of them being underage.
Controversial Actions
As the leader of the FLDS Church, Jeffs had the power to perform marriage ceremonies. He often took young girls as his brides, even marrying two 12-year-old girls in one day. He also insisted that children of the church members not attend secular schools. Jeffs was known to have significant control over the church's lands, which were valued at $100 million.
In 2005, Jeffs gained media attention when a 14-year-old girl named Elissa Wall revealed that she was forced into a marriage with her cousin. This scandal led to increased scrutiny from the FBI and the press. Jeffs went into hiding but was arrested in Nevada in August 2006.
Legal Troubles
In 2007, Jeffs was convicted of sexual assault and child molestation and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, due to procedural errors, he was released shortly after beginning his sentence. In 2008, further evidence was found during a raid on the FLDS community, including documents confirming illegal marriages and sexual relationships with underage girls.
