Biography of Wayne Coyne

American punk rock musician Wayne Coyne was born on January 13, 1961, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Oklahoma City in a large and close-knit family with four brothers, a sister, a dog, two cats, and a snake. Despite not enjoying school, Wayne preferred creative pursuits from an early age, particularly painting and drawing, creating masterpieces in his own unique style.

In his early teens, influenced by his older brothers who played in a band, Wayne developed a passion for music. While attending high school, he started working at a local restaurant, which became his source of income for the next twelve years. With his earnings, he bought his first guitar. In the late 1970s, while still dabbling in painting and having produced several significant artworks, Wayne began to develop himself as a musician by organizing rock shows in public parking lots.

In 1983, Coyne formed the band Flaming Lips with his brother Mark as the lead vocalist and Michael Ivins on bass guitar. Later, Mark left the group, and Wayne took over vocal duties. The young band gained attention from critics, who described Coyne as a "punk rocker on wheels." Wayne himself admits that they often experimented with drugs and made strange music when they were young.

Music was not Coyne's only outlet for self-expression. He utilized his creative abilities for numerous stage performances, emblems, and set designs. Thanks to him, the band's live shows were always vibrant and flamboyant, featuring laser special effects, balloons, and elaborate stage decorations. Wayne also continued to pursue painting and rarely parted with his paints.

In the late 1980s, Wayne regularly donated blood to support himself while recording the Flaming Lips' final album. During this time, he also started to dreadlock his hair and took on the task of laundering the band's clothes. However, the group signed a contract with Warner Brothers Records, allowing Wayne to finally quit his restaurant job and dedicate all his time to the band.

Around the same time, Coyne met his future wife, Michelle Martin, and purchased his first property at a bargain price at an auction in their hometown of Oklahoma City. This house became the famous residence of the Flaming Lips, where all the band's belongings are still stored to this day.

In the early 1990s, Wayne seemed to settle down, traded his exotic hairstyle for a more conventional look, and met Steven Drozd, a songwriting collaborator whose partnership brought him the biggest success. The band reached new heights, and Wayne had another chance to fulfill his artistic ambitions. Thanks to Coyne's ideas in studio arrangements and live performances, the Flaming Lips' audience expanded.

After a decade had passed, Wayne prepared to shoot a feature film, personally conducting auditions and writing the soundtrack, while the band was still touring with their latest album "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots." Filming extended until 2003, and the movie, titled "Christmas on Mars," premiered at the "Sasquatch!" music festival in a circus tent. This low-budget project depicted the first celebration of Christmas on a colonized Mars. Wayne Coyne not only directed and designed the set but also played an extraterrestrial being, a native Martian.

The band brought the tent with them on tour and screened the film after each of their performances. "The concept was taken from one of those midnight movies like 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' that I used to go to as a teenager, before cable TV took over everything," explains Wayne Coyne.
