Wayne Krivsky: From Duke Blue Devil to MLB Executive
College Career and Professional BeginningsWayne Krivsky, a Duke University alumnus, played baseball for three years at the collegiate level before graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Management Science. Following his graduation, he embarked on a career in professional baseball management, holding various positions ranging from office administration to scouting.
Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds
Krivsky initially joined the Texas Rangers in their ticket office, where he later transitioned to scouting and eventually became an assistant general manager (1984-1994). In 2006, businessman Bob Castellini hired Krivsky to serve as general manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
Notable Transactions as Reds GM
During his tenure as the Reds' general manager, Krivsky executed several notable transactions:
- Acquired right-handed pitcher Bronson Arroyo from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for outfielder Willy Mo Peña. Arroyo went on to make the All-Star team in his first year with Cincinnati.
- Traded for infielder Brandon Phillips from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a player to be named later. Phillips won multiple Gold Glove Awards at second base and was an All-Star in 2010.
- Sent outfielder Austin Kearns, infielder Felipe Lopez, and right-handed pitcher Ryan Wagner to the Washington Nationals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Gary Majewski, left-handed pitcher Bill Bray, infielder Royce Clayton, and minor leaguers Brendan Harris and Daryl Thompson.
Departure from the Reds
On April 23, 2008, just 21 games into the season, Krivsky was relieved of his duties as the Reds' general manager and replaced by Walt Jocketty.
Subsequent Career
After leaving the Reds, Krivsky joined the New York Mets as a major league scout in June 2008. In November of the same year, the Baltimore Orioles hired him as a special assistant to the president for baseball operations, where he handled scouting, contract negotiations, and other administrative responsibilities.
Return to the Twins
In 2011, the Minnesota Twins brought Krivsky back as a special assistant to the GM. He continues to hold this position today, providing valuable insights and expertise to the Twins' baseball operations.
