Franz Anton Gundaker, Count von Colloredo-Mannsfeld
Early Life and Military CareerBorn on October 15, 1738, Franz Anton Gundaker, Count von Colloredo-Mannsfeld, began his military career in the Austrian army. In 1784, he was promoted to lieutenant field marshal and became the commander of the 56th Infantry Regiment.
Service in the Austro-Turkish War
During the Austro-Turkish War, Colloredo held the position of general field ordnance master. His leadership and strategic planning contributed to several key victories.
Campaigns against Revolutionary France
In 1792, Colloredo distinguished himself in the campaigns against revolutionary France. He fought bravely in various battles, earning recognition for his valor at Honne and Estres.
Later Appointments and Promotions
From 1796 onwards, Colloredo served as governor-general of Moravia and later as commander of the Austrian border troops. In 1807, he became president of the political-economic group within the State Military Council. In 1808, he was promoted to the rank of field marshal.
Death and Legacy
Franz Anton Gundaker, Count von Colloredo-Mannsfeld, passed away on September 4, 1822, in Vienna. Despite his significant contributions to the Austrian army, his name is often mistakenly associated with the Russian Order of Saint George, 3rd Degree. This honor was actually bestowed upon his nephew, Hieronymous von Colloredo-Mansfeld.
