Gazi Hasan Pasha: From Slave to Grand Vizier
Born in the 1730s, Gazi Hasan Pasha's early life was marked by hardship. As a Georgian slave, he was purchased at a market and raised alongside the sons of his merchant master. His upbringing, however, was marked by opportunity and education.
Naval Career and Rise to Power
Gazi Hasan Pasha's service in Algiers earned him the moniker "Cezayirli" ("Algerian"). As a distinguished member of the Ottoman Navy, he participated in the Battle of Chesme, where he effectively commanded the Turkish fleet. In 1773, he founded the Turkish Naval Academy, leaving a lasting legacy on the nation's maritime development.
Military Campaigns and Provincial Governance
Gazi Hasan Pasha played a key role in suppressing the Acre rebellion in 1775. He later extended his influence to Egypt, where he quelled a Mamluk uprising and established Ottoman provincial control. However, his efforts to pacify Egypt proved temporary, as the Mamluks regained power after his death.
Leadership in the Russo-Turkish War
Despite his advanced age, Gazi Hasan Pasha led Ottoman forces in the initial phase of the Russo-Turkish War (1787-1792). Although he faced defeat at Ochakov, he managed to survive the disaster.
Legacy and Demise
Gazi Hasan Pasha's tenure as Grand Vizier in 1790 was brief and marked by the ongoing Russo-Turkish War. He passed away in the same year, either from natural causes or suspected poisoning. His legacy as an exceptional Ottoman admiral and statesman continues to be remembered.
