Werner Freund, a former German paratrooper, is now the leader of a wolf pack. With his strong hold over the pack, Werner is able to control the wolves, who playfully interact with him and even take food directly from his mouth. Werner's story is reminiscent of the tale of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves, and while there may be some truth to these stories of children raised by wild animals, it is often difficult for them to integrate into human society. Werner Freund's wolf pack resides in a mini nature reserve that he himself created near the German town of Merzig, in the Saar region. The reserve spans 25 acres and has been Werner's project since 1972. Over the past 40 years, Werner has personally raised over 70 animals, most of which were born in captivity and acquired from various zoos and sanctuaries around the world. The pack consists of wolves from different breeds, some from Europe, others from Siberia, Mongolia, and even North America. While the wolves may differ in their origins, they grow up together from a young age and share a bond.

The conditions in which these wolf breeds thrived in the wild may have varied, but in Werner Freund's reserve, they all seem to adapt well. To an outsider, Werner's interactions with the pack may seem like a circus act, with 29 real wolves behaving friendly towards a human. However, achieving this level of trust was not easy for Werner. He had to work hard to establish himself as the alpha wolf and maintain his authority. Even today, he carefully guards his position during feeding time, ensuring that none of his wolves dare to challenge him. The diet for Werner and his pack consists mainly of meat, with a substantial supply of deer carcasses.

Werner's story serves as a testament to the fact that not all humans require advanced technology to find their place in the world. Some argue that Werner has become more wolf than human, while others blame him for creating a dependence between the pack and himself, making it difficult for the wolves to fend for themselves after his death. Nonetheless, Werner remains focused on his responsibilities as the leader of the wolf pack, as he continues to manage and care for his beloved creatures.
