David W. Panuelo: A Micronesian Statesman

Early Life and Education

David W. Panuelo was born into a prominent family from the Island of Woleai, Chuuk State, in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). He attended elementary and high school in his home state before pursuing higher education in the United States. In 1986, Panuelo enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa's William S. Richardson School of Law.

Legal Career

After graduating from law school in 1988, Panuelo returned to FSM and joined the FSM Public Defender's Office as a Chief Trial Attorney for the states of Kosrae and Chuuk (1988-1991). He gained valuable courtroom experience, advocating for the rights of individuals throughout Micronesia.

Governor of Chuuk State

Panuelo entered politics in 2005 when he was elected Governor of Chuuk State. During his tenure (2005-2011), he focused on economic development, education, and healthcare initiatives. He was re-elected for a second term in 2009.

National Political Career

In 2011, Panuelo stepped down as Governor to become a Senator for Chuuk State in the FSM's National Congress. He served as Speaker of the 19th Congress (2015) and President of the 23rd Congress (2023).

Presidency of the Federated States of Micronesia

On May 11, 2023, David W. Panuelo was elected President of the Federated States of Micronesia. He assumed office the same day. As the nation's leader, he is responsible for overseeing the executive branch and ensuring the stability and prosperity of Micronesia.

Personal Life

Panuelo is married and has eight children. He is a devout Christian and actively involved in his community, particularly in church-related activities and charitable organizations.
