Gustav Mahler
Gustav Mahler was an Austrian conductor. He graduated from the Vienna Conservatory in 1865, studying under Felix Otto Dessoff.
Musical Career
In 1874, Mahler became the Kapellmeister of the Vienna Court Opera. He conducted the first performance of Richard Wagner's opera "Tannhäuser" in Vienna. From 1880, he was the conductor of the Vienna Society of Friends of Music.
From 1884 to 1889 and from 1898 to 1906, Mahler worked in the United States as the principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During the break from 1890 to 1895, he returned to lead the Vienna Society of Friends of Music, and from 1895 to 1896, he worked in Dresden.
Compositions
Mahler's compositional legacy includes a Requiem, several operettas, various chamber ensembles, and two piano sonatas. He was known for his innovative and expressive style of conducting, which transformed the role of the conductor and elevated the status of orchestral music. Mahler's works, particularly his symphonies, are today considered among the most important and influential in the classical repertoire.
