Biography of Wilhelm Lehmbruck
Wilhelm Lehmbruck was an outstanding German sculptor, artist, and graphic artist. He was born into a miner's family and went on to graduate from the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts.
International Recognition
Lehmbruck gained international recognition in 1910 when his sculpture "Standing Female Figure" was presented at the Paris Salon. This work showcased the influence of the ancient tradition of sculpture on the artist. The free and lively structure of the body, along with the perfect proportions and contours, elevated his statue to the status of eternal and timeless masterpieces of sculpture.
Influences and Style
Lehmbruck was significantly influenced by the works of Aristide Maillol and Georges Minne. However, by 1911, he had developed his own unique style. He believed that everything in art was subject to measure and proportion. According to Lehmbruck, "Measure upon measure means everything. Measure, or the proportions of the figures, determine the impression, the action, the silhouette of the sculpture, and everything else. Therefore, a good sculpture should be created like a good composition - like a designed building, where each dimension is measured with reasonable measure." He applied this understanding of artistic harmony to his statues, primarily basing them on the classical system of proportions.

In 1919, Lehmbruck tragically ended his life by committing suicide. His works are exhibited at the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, which was named after him and is housed in a building designed by his son, Manfred Lehmbruck, a renowned museum architect. Some of his notable works include "The Great Standing" (1910) at the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, "Kneeling Woman" (1911), "Rising Youth" (1913), "Full of Emotions" (1913/1914), and "The Fallen" (1915/1916).
