Austrian Artist

Gustav Klimt was born in Baumgarten, Austria, on July 14, 1862. His father, Ernst Klimt, was a gold engraver, and his mother, Anna Klimt (née Finster), was a musician. Klimt showed an early talent for art, and at the age of 14, he enrolled at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts.

Education and Early Career

At the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, Klimt studied under Karl Grahoviny and Ludwig Minnigerode. He also studied woodcarving and fresco painting. In 1896, he began studying painting under Karl Karger. Klimt's early works were influenced by the academic style of his teachers, but he soon developed his distinctive style.

Secession and Golden Period

In 1897, Klimt co-founded the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who sought to break free from the conservative art establishment. Klimt became the president of the Secession in 1898. During this period, Klimt's style became more decorative and sensual. He began to use gold leaf and other precious materials in his paintings, and his works often depicted women in various states of dress and undress.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1905, Klimt was appointed professor of art graphics at the Vienna College of Applied Arts. He held this position until 1938, when he was forced to resign by the Nazis. Klimt died in Vienna on February 6, 1918, at the age of 55. He is considered one of the most important artists of the Art Nouveau movement.
