Bill Brock: A Tennessean in Congress and the Reagan Administration
William Emerson Brock III, a Republican politician from Tennessee, served in both chambers of Congress and held positions within the U.S. administration from 1981 to 1987.
Early Life and Education
Brock earned a Bachelor of Science from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy until 1956.
Congressional Career
In 1962, Brock was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He represented Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District from January 3, 1963, to January 3, 1971, becoming the first Republican elected from that district in 40 years.
On January 3, 1971, Brock became a U.S. Senator, representing Tennessee until January 3, 1977. He was succeeded by future Vice President Al Gore.
Republican National Committee and Reagan Administration
From 1977 to 1981, Brock served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee, succeeding Mary Louise Smith.
Following the inauguration of President Ronald Reagan in 1981, Brock was appointed United States Trade Representative.
After Ray Donovan resigned as Secretary of Labor on March 15, 1985, Brock replaced him on April 29 of that year, serving until October 31, 1987.
Later Career
After leaving politics, Brock held advisory roles with the Caring Institute in Washington, D.C., the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Council for a Community of Democracies, and the Washington Center.
He was also a member of the American Legion, a veterans organization. Brock's grandfather, William Emerson Brock, was also a U.S. Senator from Tennessee as a Democrat.
